The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the horse’s mane felt between my fingers—coarse, a little damp from the morning heat. We’d barely left Turtle Beach when our guide, Andre, grinned back at us and said, “Ready for a swim?” I thought he was joking until we actually rode straight into the Caribbean. The water was warm against my legs; my horse seemed to love it more than I did. There was this salty breeze mixing with the smell of wet earth and sunscreen—oddly comforting. I still think about that view back toward the shore, all green and bright blue.

After drying off (sort of), we switched gears—literally—to ATVs. The trail behind Ocho Rios wasn’t smooth; it rattled your bones in a way that made me laugh out loud.
