The experience

First thing I noticed at Rose Hall Great House wasn’t the house itself. It was the drumming. You hear it before you see anything, this low rhythm that kind of gets under your skin. A guy at the entrance grinned and asked if we were ready to meet Jamaica’s most famous ghost. I laughed, but honestly, I wasn’t sure. Our guide, Marcia, waved us over and started telling stories before we’d even made it up the steps.

The place is huge: white walls against all that green, and you can smell the sea somewhere nearby. Inside felt cooler than outside (thank god), and Marcia pointed out these old portraits and furniture from when European families ran everything here. She had this way of making even the creaky floorboards sound interesting. We weren’t allowed to take photos in the house: Marcia said it’s “house rules,” but also joked that maybe Annee Palmer didn’t want her picture taken anymore. I tried to say “Rose Hall” in Patois and got it so wrong one of the staff nearly dropped his tray laughing.

The story about Annee Palmer, the White Witch, gets a little wild. Supposedly she killed three husbands right there. The dungeon was darker than I expected.
