The Experience

He was already waving before I’d even cleared the doors at Montego Bay airport — big grin, sign with my name, and this easy way of making you feel like you’ve landed somewhere familiar. The air outside was thick and warm, smelled faintly of salt and diesel, and I remember thinking how different it felt from home. Our driver (I think his name was Dwayne?) checked in about our bags — “You got more coming?” — then helped us wrangle the suitcases into the van. I tried to lift one myself but he just laughed and said, “Relax, you’re on island time now.”

The drive to Azul Negril Resort took maybe an hour and a half? Time sort of blurred because we kept chatting about everything — music on the radio (lots of reggae, obviously), where to get jerk chicken that’s actually good, how busy Negril gets on weekends. He asked if we wanted quiet or stories; we picked stories. There were patches of rain on the windows for a few minutes, then sun again. At some point I realized I hadn’t worried once about directions or schedules — which is rare for me when traveling. The whole transfer felt like being looked after by someone who genuinely cared if you were comfortable.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on an airport transfer, honestly. Dwayne told us about his daughter’s first day at school (“She cried more than me!”), pointed out a mango stand he swore was the best in Jamaica (I still regret not stopping), and even gave us tips for getting around Negril without looking too lost.
