The Experience

We were already weaving through the crowds in Vatican City when Chiara, our guide, handed out those little headsets — honestly, I thought I’d never use one, but with all the echo and chatter in the Vatican Museums, it made a difference. The colors are softer than in photos, more human somehow. I tried to spot every detail Michelangelo painted overhead but my neck gave out before my curiosity did. St. Peter’s Basilica was open that day — apparently sometimes it isn’t — so we slipped right in after skipping another line outside. Light streamed through these impossible windows and people just wandered around looking up or lighting candles. There was a priest humming quietly near one side altar; not sure if he noticed us at all. We ended outside in St. Peter’s Square where Chiara cracked a joke about getting lost among 300,000 people (not today though).
