You land in Rome with a free morning, or you've already spent two days in the city and the Vatican Museums are still on your list. Either way, you're standing outside the gates knowing that five million people a year queue for the Sistine Chapel, and most of them are there right now. This private tour gets you past that line. Your guide meets you at an agreed time, takes you straight into the Vatican Museums ahead of the crowds, and you spend real time in front of Michelangelo's ceiling instead of shuffling past it in a bottleneck. The whole thing — Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica — takes about three hours, which sounds tight until you realize you're not waiting, not getting lost, and not standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a thousand other tourists.

Inside the Museums, the guide walks you through 54 museums and 1,400 rooms, but you're not seeing all of it — you're seeing the pieces that matter. Only one actual painting hangs in the basilica, above the Pieta. The tour ends in front of the Basilica, and you can stay longer if you want, but you won't be able to go back to the Sistine Chapel or the Museums — so plan your time accordingly. Wear comfortable sneakers or shoes with orthopedic soles; the walk is 2.3 km on hard marble. Knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women, no exceptions. If you need a Spanish or Portuguese-speaking guide instead of English, mention it when you book.
