The experience
I thought I’d be overwhelmed: honestly, the crowds outside the Vatican Museums looked like a festival. But our guide, Paolo, just grinned and waved us past everyone in line. That felt surreal. Inside, it was quieter than I expected. Maybe because we moved quickly, or maybe my brain was still catching up. The air smelled faintly of old stone and polish: hard to describe but definitely not like anywhere else in Rome.
We only had two hours for this express tour, so Paolo kept us moving but never rushed. He pointed out tiny things I’d have missed: like the way the light hits Raphael’s colors in one room but not the next. In the Gallery of Maps, someone’s phone beeped and echoed weirdly off those painted walls (I tried to imagine what the popes would think). Paolo told us stories about Michelangelo that made me laugh: apparently he hated painting ceilings at first. I tried saying “buongiorno” to an older guard and got a nod back. Small thing, but it made me feel less like a tourist for half a second.
Walking into the Sistine Chapel was… I don’t know how to put it without sounding dramatic. Everyone went silent at once, even the restless kids. You can’t talk in there anyway, but it’s more than that. It’s like you’re standing inside someone else’s imagination. My neck hurt from looking up so long but I didn’t care. We left through a side exit Paolo showed us (another perk of having him), blinking into sunlight again.
