The Experience

You're in the boat at Cusiano, paddle in hand, the Noce River already moving fast beneath you. The guide checks your helmet one more time, then pushes off into the current. Within minutes the first rapids hit—grade 2, manageable, but loud enough that you feel the river's weight. The Alps rise on both sides, steep and close. This is Val di Sole, and the water here doesn't slow down.

The route covers 18 kilometers total, split into two sections with a short break in between. The first stretch runs from Cusiano through the "Mezzana World Championship Circuit"—that's where the grade 4 rapids live, the ones that make your forearms burn and your breath catch. You'll thread through grade 2 and 3 sections too, but the grade 4 is the one you'll remember: water piling up in ways that look impossible, the boat dropping and rising, spray everywhere. After about 10 kilometers you pull out near Dimaro, walk a bit, then drive a few kilometers upstream to Malé to start the second run.

The second half is where the landscape gets theatrical. The "forest gorges" section has walls so close you can almost touch them, and the water moves through them like it's been doing this for centuries. There's a section called the "never-ending holes"—basically a series of drops that keep coming—and then the "three peaks," which is exactly what it sounds like. You finish at Cavizzana, 18 kilometers downstream from where you started, soaked and tired and probably grinning. The guide handles the technical calls; your job is to paddle hard when they say paddle and hold on when the boat tips sideways, which it will.

Ursus Adventures runs this, and they've got the safety piece locked down—life jacket, helmet, wetsuit, the works. You meet 30 minutes before departure to get fitted and briefed. The extreme rafting on the Noce isn't a float; it's a workout that happens to be on water, with the Alps as the view.
