The Experience

You download the World City Trail app, enter your 10-digit booking code, and you're ready to go—no guide waiting, no meeting time, no schedule to keep. The walk covers 3.1 kilometers and takes around 46 minutes of pure walking time, though most people spend closer to two and a half hours total because the riddles make you stop and look. You can start at Ponte Rosso (the suggested entry point) or anywhere else on the route; the app works in any order, so if you're standing at Piazza della Borsa first, you start there instead.

At each stop—the Roman Theatre, Piazza Unità d'Italia, Parco della Rimembranza, Castello di San Giusto, Cattedrale di San Giusto and the others—you solve a puzzle using what you observe around you. The riddle unlocks the next location and reveals the history or legend of where you're standing. If you want to listen instead of read, the app includes optional text-to-speech narration in six languages: English, German, French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish. You get hand-picked local restaurant and shop recommendations woven through the stops, so you know where to pause for a Trieste coffee or a meal without hunting for it yourself.
