The experience

After pickup, the guide drives you 30 minutes along the Gulf of Trieste to Old Duino Castle. Begun in 1389 on cliffs above the water, the castle shares its grounds with the ruins of an eleventh-century fortress, and in the nineteenth century it was a home of Prince Alexander von Thurn und Taxis and Princess Marie, patrons of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. You tour the castle and take in the clifftop views before heading back to the coast road.

The drive to Miramare Castle follows the Strada Costiera, the most scenic route between the two. Miramare is the white castle that overlooks the sea surrounded by a park of exotic trees. A guide takes you through the interior, then you have time for a snack or light lunch at a nearby café with a view of the water. The castle's story (it belonged to a young imperial couple whose fate was tragic) draws visitors from across Europe, and the setting itself is the draw: the building and grounds together make the stop worth the journey.
