The experience

The tour starts at the Touristation Office in Piazza Navona, where you meet your guide 15 minutes before departure. Piazza Navona itself sits on the footprint of the Stadium of Domitian, built in 86 AD for athletics and horse racing. The square's shape still traces the ancient arena's perimeter. You walk through the square to see Bernini's Fountain of the 4 Rivers and the baroque architecture that defines this part of Rome, then move on to the Pantheon, explored from outside. The Pantheon is nearly 2,000 years old and remains one of the most preserved ancient temples in the world: its round shape and engineering still impress visitors daily.

From there you reach Trevi Fountain, the largest and best-known fountain in Rome. You toss a coin into it as the tradition goes, and your guide shares the secrets the fountain holds. Then comes the distinctive part: a 45-minute guided descent into the Trevi District underground. You roam through three sections of an archaeological area known as the "City of Water," where you see how the fountain's water filters through ancient masonry and continues to supply the pipes and pools of a luxurious Domus residence that once stood above. The tour ends at Venice Square, where you see the Altar of the Fatherland, Palazzo Venezia and Palazzo Bonaparte.

The entire experience runs about two and a half hours. You'll need to be comfortable walking and descending into underground passages. The tour suits all fitness levels, and infants or small children can ride in a pram or stroller. Public transportation is available near the meeting point if you need it to get there.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.

What is the Pantheon like when you see it on this tour?

The Pantheon is explored from outside, not entered. It's one of the most beautiful Roman buildings and still stands as an engineering masterpiece nearly 2,000 years after its construction. Its round shape and balanced architecture are what make it remarkable, so much so that Renaissance architects like Raphael and Michelangelo were inspired by it.

What happens in the underground part of the tour?

You descend into the Trevi District archaeological area for 45 minutes, moving through three sections of what is called the "City of Water." You see how water from Trevi Fountain filters through the ancient masonry below and continues to supply the pipes and pools of a former luxury residence, revealing the engineering that connected the fountain to the buildings beneath it.

Where do you meet the guide, and how much time should I allow before the tour starts?

Meet your guide at the Touristation Office in Piazza Navona 25. You should arrive 15 minutes before the departure time so the guide can greet you and brief you before you begin walking.

Does the tour include entry to the Pantheon?

No. The Pantheon is explored from outside only, so you see its exterior and learn its history from your guide without purchasing separate admission.

What is Piazza Navona built on?

Piazza Navona sits on the remains of the Stadium of Domitian, an arena built in 86 AD by the Roman emperor for athletics competitions and horse racing. The square's shape today still reproduces the perimeter of that ancient stadium.
