The Experience

The driver was waiting outside the hotel with a sign before we'd even finished coffee, and that small thing — being on time, being expected — set the tone for the whole transfer. A private transfer from Syracuse to Palermo isn't a tour, but it's also not just sitting in traffic. What made the difference for us was asking about stops. We didn't have time that day, but I watched other travellers pull over near Mondello or the towns between the two cities, and the whole thing became less of a transfer and more of a chance to see the middle of Sicily without renting a car or figuring out trains. One thing to know upfront: if your transfer falls between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., there's a 20 percent surcharge added to the price, and you pay that directly to the driver in cash at the end. Child seats come included if you ask for them at booking — just give the age, weight and height of each child when you reserve. The driver will have it ready. If your group is larger than eight, you'll need to make two separate bookings, but that's straightforward to arrange when you're setting the pickup time and location.
