The Experience
The tour starts at the Gray Line office and opens with Piazza Tasso, the central square named after the poet Torquato Tasso and home to a statue of the city's patron saint. From there you walk Corso Italia, the main street, and step into the Cathedral of Sorrento—a hidden gem just off the bustle. Originally built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 15th, it blends Neo-Gothic and Baroque styles; inside you'll see the font where Torquato Tasso himself was baptized, along with local marquetry work that the guide explains as you move through.
The Cloister of San Francesco comes next—a quiet courtyard built on the remains of a 7th-century monastery, with columns each differently decorated and a massive pepper tree in the center. It's a step away from the noise of the main piazza. You'll also visit Vallone dei Mulini, the Valley of the Mills, a historic ravine with stone flour mills dating back to the 13th century, now silent and atmospheric. At Villa Comunale, the gardens overlook the sea and Vesuvius; this is where the guide stops you to take pictures at the best viewpoints in town.
The walk ends at Marina Grande, Sorrento's fishing village separated from the main town by a dramatic stone gateway. Colorful wooden boats, pastel houses, and nets drying in the sun give it the feel of a place that time passed by—which is partly why it was chosen for the 1954 film Scandal in Sorrento. Family-run restaurants line the harbor. Before the tour closes, you get a refreshing break: fresh orange or lemon juice, or a lemon gelato, depending on what you choose.

What is Marina Grande and why does it feel different from the rest of Sorrento?
Marina Grande is Sorrento's original fishing village, separated from the main town by a stone gateway built by the Greeks. While Sorrento developed into a tourist hub, Marina Grande kept its traditional character—colorful wooden boats, pastel-colored houses, and family-run seafood restaurants. It was the filming location for the 1954 movie Scandal in Sorrento starring Sophia Loren.
Can I book a private tour instead of joining a group?
Yes. The English Private Tour option is available at checkout, so you walk with just your guide instead of a shared group.
What is the Cloister of San Francesco and what will I see there?
The Cloister of San Francesco is a 14th-century courtyard built on the remains of a 7th-century monastery, steps away from the main piazza. Each column is decorated differently, and a majestic pepper tree stands in the center. The cloister blends architectural styles from pre-Roman, Arabic, and medieval periods.
Do I need to be fit to do this walking tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and public transportation options are available nearby if you need them.
What's included in the refreshment break?
You get a choice: fresh orange juice, fresh lemon juice, or a delicious lemon gelato—a taste of Sorrento included in the tour price.
Does the tour visit the Cathedral of Sorrento?
Yes. The Cathedral of Sorrento (Santi Filippo e Giacomo) is a hidden gem just off Corso Italia. Built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 15th, it has a Neo-Gothic facade and Baroque interior with precious local marquetry and the baptismal font of the poet Torquato Tasso.
