The experience

You meet the skipper in central Cagliari, minutes from the cruise terminal, and after a safety briefing the boat casts off into open water. The route follows the wild coastline toward the limestone cliffs of Sella del Diavolo, Devil's Saddle, the symbol of Cagliari, and passes directly in front of Pigeon's Cave, a natural sea cave carved into brilliant white limestone that opens onto deep blue water. The cave is one of the most photographed spots on the coast, and the skipper slows to let you frame it. This is when the GoPro starts recording. In this area, dolphins sometimes swim beneath the cliffs, and the cave's namesake birds nest in the rock.

Your first snorkeling stop is right beneath the Devil's Saddle's sheer faces, where the water is deep, crystal clear and an intense cobalt blue. You put on the mask and enter a natural aquarium, with the limestone wall rising behind you: the GoPro captures the moment. From there the boat moves to Poetto Beach, Cagliari's main summer strand, but instead of the crowded sand you stop in transparent turquoise water at a distance from shore, with the long promenade visible across the bay and the white sandy bottom reflecting light in shades of tropical blue. At Calamosca Bay, a sheltered cove surrounded by pristine nature with emerald green water, the skipper brings out a cold local Ichnusa beer or a soft drink while you float and watch the fish-filled seabed. The bay's natural protection keeps the water calm.

The final snorkeling session is at Cala Bernat, a quiet local secret where the seabed is particularly rich in marine life and the water clarity allows for sharp underwater photos before the sail back to port. The skipper's choice of which stops to visit and how long to stay at each one depends on weather and sea conditions that day, so the itinerary adapts to give you the best experience.

What is Pigeon's Cave like when you pass it on the boat?

Pigeon's Cave is a natural sea cave carved into a wall of brilliant white limestone that contrasts with intense blue water. The cave opens into the cliff face and is one of the most photographed spots on the Cagliari coastline. You snorkel at five locations: beneath Devil's Saddle's cliffs, at Poetto Beach in turquoise water offshore, at Calamosca Bay where the seabed is rich with fish, and at Cala Bernat for the final swim.
