The experience

Segesta Archaeological Park opens the day. The site holds a Doric temple and a theater that once seated 4,000 spectators and still hosts musical performances and ancient tragedies. You walk the acropolis remains and stand inside a structure that has hosted audiences for over two thousand years. The theater's survival and its continued use mark the site as something more than a ruin. It is a working stage.

The route then turns toward the coast and the Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans Natural Reserve, a 1,000-hectare expanse of white salt tanks and historic windmills. The windmills are the visual signature of the reserve, relics of the salt-processing methods that shaped the landscape from the fifth century BC onward. Flamingos and other bird species inhabit the ponds, and the geometry of the tanks creates the color shifts photographers seek. You have time to walk the reserve and explore the historic center of Trapani itself, where you can order Cous Cous di pesce, the local fish dish, in one of the restaurants near the waterfront.

Erice, the final stop, sits on Mount San Giuliano and counts among Italy's most beautiful medieval villages. Narrow streets wind past watchtowers, monasteries, historic gates and more than sixty churches, all enclosed by Cyclopean walls that blend medieval, Arab, Baroque and Liberty architectural styles. The town is also known for Genovese, a custard-filled pastry sold in the local shops. The drive back to Palermo follows, arriving in the evening.
