The Experience

The boat pulls away from the dock and the limestone cliffs rise up around you almost immediately. You're heading south from Lecce toward the tip of Salento, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, and the skipper is already pointing out the first landmarks — Punta Meliso, then the white lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca cutting through the haze. On the Adriatic side they're carved into pale stone, some with openings so narrow the boat slows to a crawl and you duck.
