The Caves of Santa Maria di Leuca: A 3-Hour Boat Route Through Puglia's Hidden Coast

You board a small boat in Lecce and spend three hours exploring the caves carved into the cliffs at Santa Maria di Leuca, with stops on both the Adriatic and Ionian sides. Two swimming breaks let you snorkel in clear water with provided gear. The skipper narrates the route and the history, and you're back by early afternoon.

The Experience

The boat pulls away from the dock and the limestone cliffs rise up around you almost immediately. You're heading south from Lecce toward the tip of Salento, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, and the skipper is already pointing out the first landmarks — Punta Meliso, then the white lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca cutting through the haze. The water is so clear you can see the seabed shift colors beneath the hull. This isn't a long drive; it's about an hour to the caves, which means most of your three hours on the water goes to actually exploring them, not sitting on a bench.

The caves come in sequence, and the skipper knows them all by name — dei Cazzafri, la Fiumara, Terradico, dei Gabbiani, Verdusella, Ortocupo. On the Adriatic side they're carved into pale stone, some with openings so narrow the boat slows to a crawl and you duck. Then you swing around Punta Ristola to the Ionian side, where the caves have different names and a different character: the Cave of the Devil, the Circle, Mesciu Giannu, the River, the Nativity Scene, the Three Gates, the Giants, the Dragon and the lovers. The skipper talks through the history and the geology, but mostly you're just watching the rock formations change shape as the light hits them differently from each angle. It's the kind of tour where you don't need to take notes; you just watch.

Two stops are built in for swimming — about 20 minutes each — and snorkeling gear is included, so you can go down and see what's underneath. The water temperature in summer is warm enough that you won't want to get out. After the second swim stop, the boat turns back toward Lecce, and you've got the whole ride to dry off and let the salt air do its work. The whole thing takes three hours door to door, which is long enough to feel like a real outing but short enough that you're not exhausted by the time you're back on solid ground.

What’s included

Your three hours include boat transport from Lecce to Santa Maria di Leuca and back, exploration of the caves on both the Adriatic and Ionian sides, snorkeling equipment for the two swimming stops, and skipper narration of the history and geography of the coast.
