The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel nervous walking into a rooftop bar, but there’s something about climbing up through the old Pamphilj Palace that makes your heart pound a bit — maybe it’s the hush of the stairwell or just knowing you’re about to see Rome from way up high. When we stepped onto the “La Grande Bellezza” Terrace, I had to blink a couple times. You can actually see all the way from Piazza Navona to these little domes and orange-tiled roofs stretching forever. The air smelled faintly of warm stone and someone’s perfume drifting by — not sure whose, but it fit.

Our guide (Francesca? I think that was her name) handed us glasses of prosecco before the music started. She grinned when she caught me staring at the cheese platter — honestly, I still think about that salty pecorino and how it tasted with the cool bubbles. The singers just appeared among us, no big entrance or anything, and suddenly Puccini was echoing off the walls while people leaned in over their drinks. There was this moment during a Verdi aria when everything went quiet except for the voice and some distant car horns below — kind of surreal.

It got chilly as the sun dipped behind St. Peter’s dome, but nobody seemed to care. Folks were wrapped up in conversation or just watching the sky turn pink behind statues I couldn’t name (I should’ve asked). Someone pointed out scenes from “The Great Beauty” were filmed right here — which made sense, because it all felt a bit cinematic anyway. We lingered longer than planned; hard to leave when you’re floating above Rome like that.
