The Experience

"You cannot understand Rome without understanding us," our guide said as we stepped into the narrow streets of the Ghetto, and that sentence stayed with me the whole walk. The Jews of Rome have been here longer than almost anywhere else outside Israel — more than 2,200 years — and for 330 of those years they were forced to live in this small, walled area. Walking it now with a Roman Jewish guide felt different than any other tour in the city. Not because of the facts, though there were plenty of those. But because the person telling the story had roots here, and it showed in how she pointed out a window, or paused at a corner, or introduced us to a neighbor sitting outside her apartment.

The tour moves through the Jewish Museum of Rome first, where you see the collection with your guide — and this matters because only Jewish Roman guides are authorized to take groups privately inside the synagogues and the museum itself. You visit two of them: the Spanish Synagogue and the Great Synagogue, both hidden inside buildings that don't announce themselves from the street. The architecture is cramped and vertical because of the space restrictions that were in place for centuries. After that, the walk opens into the streets themselves, where the guide stops to show you where families lived stacked on top of each other, where they adapted, where they stayed. Some of the people we met along the way shared their own memories — one woman talked about her family during the war, matter-of-fact, the way you talk about something that shaped your life but doesn't need drama added to it.

The whole thing takes three hours, and it's a group tour — up to 17 people, though the groups I've heard about tend to be smaller. You'll be walking on narrow, uneven streets, but the tour is wheelchair accessible and the museum areas are too. There's a minimum of six people needed for the tour to run, so book early enough that you're not the last person hoping to make the cut. The guide will meet you at a set time and location, and from there you're moving through the Ghetto itself, which is still a living neighborhood, not a museum piece. That's the thing that makes it real.
