The Experience

I didn’t expect the Colosseum to smell like old stone and sun-warmed dust — you always see it in photos, but walking through those arches with our guide, Francesca, felt different. She waved us past the line (which was huge, by the way), and started telling stories about gladiators and emperors right there in the shade. I kept touching the rough walls, half-listening, half-imagining what it must have sounded like when this place was packed. There was a breeze that morning, and you could hear street vendors somewhere outside selling cold water — kind of funny how some things never change.

Francesca handed us our tickets for Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum after showing us around the Colosseum. She pointed out where to go next, but also told us to take our time if we wanted — “You can stay as long as you like,” she said. We wandered up toward Palatine Hill on our own after that. The stones were hot underfoot, and I had to squint because of all that bright Roman light bouncing off marble fragments. At one point I just sat down on a low wall and watched a group of kids chasing each other between columns while their grandmother tried (and failed) to get them to pose for a photo.

I still think about standing there above the Forum, looking down at all those ruins tangled together — temples, arches, bits of history everywhere you look. It’s fast if you want it to be (the express part is real), but honestly I lost track of time just wandering around after the tour ended.
