The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel nervous standing by the Arch of Constantine, but there’s something about waiting in a crowd that’s half-excited, half-lost. The Roman Forum felt different—more open, windy, bits of grass poking between marble chunks. It smells like dust and pine needles if you breathe in deep enough. I took my time here; no one rushing me along. The audio guide pointed out arches and temples, but honestly I mostly remember an old Italian couple arguing softly over a map by the Temple of Saturn. There’s something comforting about seeing locals just… living their lives around all this history.

Palatine Hill was last for me. The climb isn’t tough but you do feel it after wandering ruins all morning—my legs definitely did anyway. From up top you get this layered view: broken columns below, city traffic further out, sunlight bouncing off rooftops. I paused longer than planned because it felt right to just sit there and listen to cicadas buzzing somewhere nearby. Even now I think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
