The Experience

We’d barely finished our first coffee when our guide, Paolo, pulled up outside our B&B in Bari — right on time, which surprised me because southern Italy runs on its own clock. The car smelled faintly of sun-warmed leather and lemon candies (Paolo’s favorite), and he greeted us with that big Apulian grin you see everywhere here. We picked three stops together: Trani for the cathedral by the water, Castel del Monte (I’d seen it on a postcard once), and a quick detour to a little village I can’t pronounce — Paolo tried to teach me but honestly, my tongue just isn’t built for it.

Trani was first. The harbor was already busy with fishermen shouting over crates of silvery fish. There’s this salty air mixed with espresso from the tiny bars along the quay. Paolo showed us how to spot the best focaccia (hint: look for the burnt tomato edges) before we wandered into the cathedral — all pale stone and cool shadows, right where the sea almost touches its steps. I still think about that hush inside, just broken by a kid giggling somewhere behind a pillar.

The drive out to Castel del Monte felt like sliding through olive groves painted every shade of green. Paolo told stories about Frederick II — apparently he was some kind of medieval rockstar around here? The castle itself is odd and geometric, sitting alone on its hill like it’s waiting for something. We touched the old stones (cold even in June) and tried to imagine knights stomping around. Lunch wasn’t planned but Paolo insisted we try burrata in Andria — so creamy it nearly slid off my fork; Li laughed at my cheese mustache.

We finished in Polignano a Mare, where balconies hang over cliffs and teenagers dare each other to jump into that wild blue water. I lost track of time watching waves crash under those stone arches. On the way back Paolo played old Italian pop songs and we all sang badly — nobody cared. If you ask me what Puglia feels like, it’s that mix of sea breeze, laughter, and someone always offering you another bite or story.
