The Experience

The boat leaves early enough to reach Peschiere di Lucullo, the first stop, while the light is still high. This isn't a snorkel-and-go: you swim a few meters into caves that a Roman politician built as fish farms in 74 BC, then walk on the stone floor inside, past walls and pavement that predate Christ. The water is clear enough that the architecture stays visible underwater. From there, the boat moves to Punta di Pioppano on Procida's main island—the old lighthouse spot, surrounded by the multicolored houses the port is known for—where the rocks are flat and the water invites a longer swim.

Punta Ottimo Beach, reachable only by sea, is where most people spend real time. The sand is black and the water deep enough to use the snorkeling mask and fins the crew provides; the seabed holds enough life that the colors alone hold attention. If you'd rather float, there's an inflatable island to lie on, or you can stay on the boat. The natural reserve of Vivara—Procida's own island, connected by an old bridge nobody uses anymore—has a rocky bottom and protected species; climbing out of the water onto the island and walking through Mediterranean scrub before jumping back in is the kind of thing that doesn't happen on bigger tours. By midday, you're ready to eat. The boat has a dining area with a U-shaped sofa and a table that seats six; order cold dishes a day before, or the crew will take you to Corricella, the fishermen's port, where restaurants line the water and locals still make their living from the sea.

The afternoon loop takes you past Solchiaro, a nearly empty peninsula hikers love, then into one of the most sheltered coves on the coast—private, accessible only by sea, and timed so the sun is moving west and flooding everything gold. There's a shower on the boat if you want to rinse off before the final stop at Corricella, where the port is car-free and the ice cream is handmade from island produce. The whole day runs seven hours, and the boat's size—not small, not big—is the reason it can reach places bigger boats can't.
