St. Angel's Castle began as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum in the 2nd century, built alongside the Aelius bridge. Over centuries it transformed into a fortress protecting Vatican City, then a garrison, prison, and repository for the Vatican's treasury and archives. The interior today holds what those layers left behind: Renaissance frescoed halls including the Hall of Apollo, the Hall of Paolina with scenes from Alexander the Great, and the Room of Amore and Psiche; a collection of antique arms; and a painting gallery with works by Carlo Crivelli, Luca Signorelli and Dosso Dossi.
