You’ll walk ancient streets in Pompeii with a local guide, skip ticket lines, and soak up Amalfi Coast views—all with private transport and flexible timing.
The morning air at Naples port had that salty tang you only get near the sea. Our driver was already waiting, holding a little sign with my name. We piled into a comfy minivan—air conditioning on, which was a relief since it was already warming up by 8am. The drive along the coast felt like watching postcards come to life. You catch glimpses of lemon groves and those pastel houses clinging to the cliffs. Sometimes you’ll spot locals zipping by on scooters, balancing crates of tomatoes or even a dog riding shotgun.
We reached Pompeii before the crowds got thick. Our guide, Lucia, met us right at the entrance—no waiting in line (which I appreciated, seeing the group tours queuing up). Walking through Via dell’Abbondanza, you can almost hear echoes of old Roman chatter. Lucia pointed out faded frescoes and showed us where bakers once sold bread. The Lupanar’s stone beds are still there—hard to imagine anyone sleeping on them! At the Stabian Baths, the air felt cooler and you could smell damp stone mixed with something earthy. Lucia even clapped her hands in the Teatro Piccolo so we could hear how sound travels—pretty wild acoustics for an ancient theater.
After Pompeii, we headed back toward the coast. There was time to wander around Positano—tiny alleys lined with shops selling sandals and limoncello. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta’s dome glinted in the sun. I grabbed a quick espresso at a little bar called Bar Internazionale; honestly, it tasted stronger than anything I’ve had back home. Later, we stopped in Sorrento for a panoramic view over Piazza Tasso. The breeze carried hints of citrus and frying fish from somewhere nearby. Our driver kept an eye on time so we’d make it back to the ship with no stress.
