The experience
The hike descends into the valley below Pitigliano and follows the river for a short stretch before climbing back up to the plateau through the vie cave: real canyons hand-dug by the Etruscans for religious and road purposes. These ancient pathways connect to necropolises, the cities of the dead where the Etruscans buried their people. A fully licensed guide leads the route, which covers about 6 km and takes roughly 3 hours total.
The tour ends at a private historic cellar featured in National Geographic. Here you can add an optional wine tasting paired with local cured meats and cheeses: a chance to taste the territory itself after walking through its history. The entire experience is built around engaging all five senses, moving from the physical act of hiking through ancient stone to the flavors of the region.
