The Experience

We stepped out from Pisa Centrale just after ten, still shaking off train sleep. Our guide—Chiara, bright scarf and all—was waiting by the fountain with a sign and a grin that felt like she’d been expecting us for ages. She led us straight into Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where pigeons were already arguing over crumbs. The city was waking up around us—someone called buongiorno from a passing bike, and I caught the smell of espresso sneaking out from a tiny bar. Chiara started talking about Pisa’s old days as a maritime republic (which I didn’t know at all), but honestly I was just staring at everyone’s shoes for some reason. Maybe it was nerves or just excitement to finally see the Leaning Tower in person.

Before we got anywhere near it though, we stopped at this massive Keith Haring mural—honestly, I’d never expected to find street art here. The colors are wild against all that pale stone. Chiara said it was his last big piece before he died. We wandered along Corso Italia next, dodging locals on their way to work or class (Pisa is definitely a student town—you can tell by the backpacks and the sleepy faces). Crossing Ponte di Mezzo over the Arno river felt like moving into another story; there’s this hush over the water even with traffic behind you. At one point someone’s dog barked so sharply it made us all laugh and break stride.

Borgo Stretto is where you get that medieval feeling—narrow lanes, arches overhead, shop windows full of pastries and shiny things I couldn’t name. In Knights’ Square, Chiara pointed out buildings where students still debate philosophy (she said sometimes they do it outside with gelato in hand). Then suddenly we’re in Piazza dei Miracoli—the grass almost too green under that white sky—and there it is: the Leaning Tower of Pisa looking both proud and kind of sheepish at the same time. We went into the Cathedral first (they make you cover your shoulders but shorts are fine), and inside it smells faintly of candle wax and old marble dust.

The climb up the Leaning Tower is weirdly disorienting—like your balance is playing tricks on you every step. My legs wobbled more than I’d admit out loud. There’s this little moment halfway up where you can peek out at red rooftops and laundry flapping in someone’s window below—it made me wish I could stay longer in Pisa just to watch daily life go by from up high. After we came down (with jelly legs), Chiara helped us grab our bags from the cloakroom and sent us off with a wave. I still think about that view from halfway up—how small everything looked but how alive it all felt.
