itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Ortigia Island and sea caves

  • Skirt Ortigia Island
  • Admire Duomo and Santa Lucia church
  • See Palazzo Veneziano and Ponte Umberto I
  • Visit small port and former Bourbon prison
  • View Spanish Walls and Lungomare di Levante
  • Explore Forte Vigliera and Castello Maniace
  • Visit Fonte Aretusa and Lungomare Alfeo
  • Pass Porta Marina
  • Discover sea caves
  • Admire stalactites, stalagmites, coral flowers
  • Stop for a dip

“You see that?” our guide Salvo shouted over the hum of the engine, pointing at Castello Maniace—his finger tracing the skyline just as a gull swooped past. We’d barely left the little port when he started telling us about the old Bourbon prison (honestly, I didn’t expect to hear prison stories on a boat tour, but here we were). The air smelled like salt and sunscreen, and someone behind me was already giggling about getting splashed. I tried to keep track of all the names—Duomo, Santa Lucia, Palazzo Veneziano—but mostly I just stared at the sunlight flickering off the Spanish Walls.

We hugged the edge of Ortigia Island for what felt like ages (in a good way), passing Lungomare di Levante and Fonte Aretusa—Salvo said locals come here at sunset but honestly I’d come back just for that weirdly sweet smell from somewhere near Porta Marina. Then suddenly we were gliding toward these jagged rocks, water turning this wild shade of turquoise. The sea caves looked smaller from outside; inside it was cool and echoey, with coral shapes twisting above us. Someone tried to name them all (“That one’s definitely an elephant!”) and Salvo just laughed. My hands got cold touching the cave walls.

I didn’t plan on swimming but when Salvo cut the engine and said “Go on, it’s tradition,” half of us jumped in without thinking. The water was sharp-cold at first but then perfect, like waking up fast. I floated there watching light bounce off stalactites and thought—yeah, this is why you do a boat tour around Ortigia instead of just walking it. On the way back someone asked if we’d have time to check out Ortigia Market later; Salvo grinned and said “Always.” Still makes me smile thinking about it.
