The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to stand where the earth once cracked open? That’s pretty much how our Mt Etna 4x4 tour started — bouncing up from Trecastagni, windows open, dust swirling in the air. Our guide Paolo had this habit of stopping mid-sentence to point out black ribbons of old lava snaking through pine trees (“That one nearly reached Zafferana,” he said, almost proud). You could still smell the burnt minerals when you stepped out — kind of metallic, mixed with pine sap and something I can’t name.

The Valle del Bove lookout is where it hit me. The wind was cold even though the sun was sharp, and the valley below looked like some giant had scooped out half the mountain. Paolo handed us helmets for the next bit — crawling into a lava tube. I’ll admit, my heart sped up going down there (it’s darker than you think), but he kept cracking jokes about “Etna’s secret tunnels” so we laughed more than we probably should’ve. My shoes came out covered in ash. Worth it.

I didn’t expect to end a volcano day sipping pistachio cream and honey from Zafferana at MontataGrande, but that’s Sicily for you. The tasting felt easy after all that hiking — wine, oil, little bites of cheese and sweets I couldn’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried). We swapped stories with another couple from Catania who’d done this day trip to Etna before; they said it never feels the same twice. Maybe that’s true. I still think about that view over Valle del Bove sometimes — wild and quiet at the same time.
