The Experience

I didn’t expect my heart to pound before we even left the ground at Fiumefreddo. The heliport was smaller than I pictured — just a few locals chatting in Sicilian, the smell of coffee somewhere nearby. Our pilot, Paolo, checked our IDs with a half-smile and explained how seats get assigned (something about weight — I tried not to take it personally). The sun was sharp that morning, bouncing off the tarmac and making everything feel sort of unreal.

Once we lifted off, Mount Etna filled the window so fast it made me laugh out loud. You can see the ancient lava flows twisting down her sides — they look almost painted from up here. Paolo pointed out old craters at 1900 meters, where people usually start the cable car hike. Up here though, you skip all that dust and crowds. The volcano’s surface is rough and black in places, then suddenly there’s a patch of snow or a tiny green village tucked in close. I caught myself gripping the seat when we banked left over a ski resort — apparently people actually ski on Etna in winter? Didn’t know that.

The headset muffled everything except Paolo’s voice and my own breathing. He told us stories about eruptions and how locals watch for changes in the smoke. At one point, I could smell something faintly mineral through the vents — maybe it was just my imagination but it felt like the mountain itself was breathing with us. We circled back past more little towns clinging to her slopes; laundry flapping on balconies, someone waving up at us (or maybe just stretching). It went by so fast but parts of it stretched out too — time gets weird when you’re floating above Sicily like that.
