The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clatter of my Rossignoli bike as we set off from Moscova—metal meeting cobblestone, that unmistakable Milan sound. Our guide, Luca, waved us forward with a grin that felt like an invitation rather than an instruction. I caught a whiff of espresso drifting from a tiny bar as we passed Piazzia Gae Aulenti, all glass and steel reflecting the morning sun. It’s strange how Milan can feel both old and new in the same breath—Bosco Verticale’s green balconies towering above us while an older man in a tweed cap pedaled past like he’d been doing this route for decades.

We zigzagged through Brera where the streets squeeze in tight and you have to slow down or risk missing the little things—a splash of paint on a shutter, someone laughing behind a bakery window. At Piazza dei Mercanti, Luca pointed out faded stone carvings I’d never have noticed alone. He told us about medieval traders shouting deals here centuries ago; I tried to imagine their voices echoing off these walls instead of today’s tram bells. The air changed as we neared Sforzesco Castle—cooler under the trees of Sempione Park, where kids chased pigeons and there was this faint smell of grass after last night’s rain.

I didn’t expect to feel so much just cycling past places I’d only seen in photos—the Arch of Peace looking almost casual in the morning haze, Cadorna station buzzing with commuters who barely glanced at us. We stopped at Darsena by the Navigli canals and Luca bought us little pastries (I still don’t know what they were called; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Italian—probably butchered it). My hands were sticky with sugar when we reached San Lorenzo columns. And then suddenly there it was: Duomo rising up out of nowhere, white marble against blue sky. It made me stop pedaling for a second just to stare.

The ride wasn’t always easy—there are hills you don’t see coming until your legs start burning—but nobody seemed to mind much. We drifted through Piazza San Fedele and past La Scala, then along via Manzoni where fashion people walked fast and looked like they had somewhere more important to be. By the time we looped around Palestro and Repubblica toward Central Station and “Pirellone,” my shirt was damp and my head full of images I didn’t want to lose. There’s something about seeing Milan this way—with a local guide leading you into corners you’d never find alone—that sticks longer than any photo.
