The experience
The tour starts at the Catalani Church, an Arab-Norman structure that survived both the devastating 1908 earthquake and wartime bombing: one of the few great monuments in the city to endure such events. From there you walk to the City Hall, the largest palace rebuilt after the earthquake, designed by architect Camilo Puglisi Allegra between 1924 and 1929. The route passes through Antonello Square to the Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, the second-largest of its kind in Southern Italy.
The Cathedral Square is the centerpiece: its bell tower and astronomical clock, completed between 1930 and 1933, stand as the most important monument in Messina. The clock itself is the main attraction visitors come to see. The tour ends at the Museum of Sicilian Puppet Theater, where you see part of the priceless collection the Gargano family has preserved since the early 19th century, passed down through generations of craftsmen.
A professional guide leads the walk in English and provides a tasting of typical Sicilian products along the way. Museum entry is included. The route is wheelchair accessible, and all surfaces are paved. You'll need a moderate level of fitness. The walk is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. The tour operates in all weather, so dress accordingly.
