The experience

The Lipica Stud Farm sits in the Karst landscape between Trieste and the caves, a working estate where Lipizzan horses have been bred for more than 400 years. The white horses move through meadows shaded by oak and chestnut trees, and the old manor house and stables anchor a landscape that has changed little since horse carriages ruled. You walk the grounds, enter the stables to stand near the horses, and visit the Lipikum Museum, which traces the history of the breed and the farm itself. The setting is built around the animals and the land they inhabit, not around a performance or a show.

Škocjan Caves opens into a different world. The cave system holds the underground river Reka and one of the largest underground canyons on earth, carved by water over millennia. A bridge crosses the canyon 40 meters above the river, and the passage is lined with giant stalactites, water rapids, and underground lakes. The UNESCO designation, awarded in 1986, reflects the site's importance to geology and archaeology as well as to the region's cultural heritage. After the main cave, the tour includes the Škocjan Caves Regional Park, an open-air museum where you walk through ethnological and geological monuments set into the landscape.

Your guide picks you up at your hotel, cruise terminal, or another agreed point in Trieste and returns you there at the end of the day. The six-hour tour includes the guide, insurance, and transport. You choose your language at checkout (English, Italian, or German). Moderate fitness helps, as the day involves walking and some uneven ground both at the farm and inside the caves.
