Two Aeolian islands in one day: motorboat route through sea caves and black sand beaches

A day trip from Taormina to Lipari and Vulcano combines bus transfer to Milazzo port with a private motorboat crossing through the UNESCO-listed Aeolian Archipelago. You visit Lipari's old town and archaeological park, sail past the Faraglioni rock formations and Horse's Cave, then spend free time on Vulcano's black beach or in its restaurants. The tour runs 12 to 13 hours with a multilingual guide and includes the motorboat transfer. Other groups travel on board.

The experience

The day starts with an air-conditioned bus pickup that carries you north to Milazzo port on Sicily's coast. From there, a private motorboat takes over for the sea crossing to Lipari. Once on the island, you have free time to explore the old town, wander through the archaeological park, or browse local shops. The motorboat then departs Lipari and sails along the Faraglioni (dramatic rock formations rising from the water), and passes through the Horse's Cave before continuing to Vulcano.

Vulcano is where the day opens up. The island's black sand beach is the main draw, formed from volcanic minerals and warmed by geothermal heat beneath the surface. You can swim, walk the shoreline, or try the mud baths if you choose (these are optional and cost extra). The island also has restaurants serving local food if you want a meal instead. After your time on Vulcano, the motorboat returns to Milazzo by the same route, passing the Rock of the Little Mermaid on the way back. A multilingual guide travels with the group throughout and speaks English, Italian, and German.

Weather and sea conditions can affect the schedule: the shipping company and port authorities make the final call on whether the boats run. Groups are shared, so you'll meet other travelers on board. Families with infants and small children can bring a pram or stroller, and the tour suits all fitness levels since most of the day involves being on the boat or walking at your own pace on the islands.

Is this one for you? You'll travel with other groups on a shared motorboat, so this suits anyone comfortable with a mixed-group experience and looking for a full-day island route rather than a private boat charter. The 12 to 13 hour commitment works best if you're based in Taormina for several days and want to see two islands without renting a car or arranging your own transport.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, German and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 12 years); Infant (under 2): free.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

What is there to do on Lipari during the free time?

Lipari's old town holds the archaeological park and cathedral, both within walking distance of the port. You can also shop in the local stores, or simply sit by the water. The guide will point out the main sites, but the time is yours to spend as you choose.

Can I swim at Vulcano, or is the black beach just for walking?

Vulcano's black beach is swimmable. The sand is warm from geothermal activity below, and the water is accessible for swimming. The mud baths are also available if you want to try them, though they're optional and require an extra fee.

How long is the boat ride from Taormina to Lipari?

The motorboat departs from Milazzo port, which you reach by bus from Taormina. The crossing to Lipari takes time, but the route passes scenic rock formations and sea caves, so the journey is part of the experience rather than dead time.

Are meals included, or do I need to bring food?

Meals are not included in the tour price. Vulcano has restaurants where you can eat during your free time on the island, or you can bring snacks and eat on the beach or boat.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The shipping company and port authorities decide whether the boats can run based on sea conditions and weather. If conditions are unsafe, the tour may be postponed or cancelled, and you'll be notified in advance.
