The experience
Piazza del Duomo anchors the start, where the Duomo's tall bell tower rises above the square's Baroque façade and surrounding palaces. From there the route moves through the Church of the Theatines, dedicated to St. Irene, where refined altars and artworks fill the interior. The Roman Amphitheatre sits in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, built between the first and second centuries to host thousands for spectacles and combats. Parts of its structure remain visible today. Nearby stands the column topped by the statue of St. Oronzo, the city's patron saint and a symbol marking where the ancient Appian Way ended its run from Rome.
The Basilica of Santa Croce closes the walking portion: an external visit to its richly carved façade, which is the finest example of Lecce Baroque, with intricate carvings, symbolic figures, and a large central rose window. The Roman Theatre, where ancient structures are still partly visible, sits nearby. The tour ends with a tasting of the pasticciotto, the region's traditional pastry, offering an authentic taste of local tradition in a single sitting.
