The experience
You leave from your hotel in Stresa, Baveno or Verbania in a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver who handles all the navigation. The first stop is the Sacro Monte, a UNESCO heritage site built on a hilltop above Orta, where you have time to walk through the old chapels and terracotta statues dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi while your driver waits. This is not a guided walk. You set the pace and decide how long to stay.
After the Sacro Monte, your driver takes you down to Orta San Giulio itself, a traffic-free medieval village where the narrow cobblestone alleys and century-old buildings open onto a main square. You have free time to wander, eat at one of the local cafés or restaurants, and if you want, buy a boat ticket to visit the island of San Giulio with its frescoed church and single walking path. You decide when you're ready to leave: pickup happens between 2pm and 3pm, whenever suits your day.
The return journey takes a different route, skirting the southern end of Lake Maggiore so you see the colossal statue of Saint Charles Borromeo from the outside before heading back to your hotel. The whole outing runs five to six hours, built around your own timing rather than a fixed schedule.
