The Experience

You board a medium-size boat at either Garda or Bardolino dock and cruise across Lake Garda with a captain guide who narrates the route. The boat has outdoor seats and sheltered indoor ones with windows that open to the wind on hot days—all shaded from direct sun. After about 30 minutes, the boat stops at Fonte Boiola, a sulphurous spring where water literally boils up through the lake surface, a sight visible only from the water and worth the camera time.

The route then curves around the Sirmione Peninsula, where the captain points out Catullo's caves (the ruins of a Roman villa), Jamaica Beach, the medieval castle, and Villa Canossa across the water at Punta San Vigilio. You'll see cypress and olive trees framing the headland—the operator calls it the Pearl of the Lake. The boat docks at Sirmione port around the midpoint of the cruise, and you have roughly 2 hours to walk the charming alleys, climb to the castle, explore the caves, or sit with an Italian coffee on the lakefront.
