Kayaking Vulcano Island: Paddle caves and thermal waters
Paddle through lava caves carved into the island's volcanic rock
Kayak around Vulcano Island for two hours, paddling into sea caves, thermal grottos and arches carved from lava, with a safety briefing and paddle instruction included. The operator chooses your boat type (open or closed kayak) based on weather and season. Children from age one are welcome, and guides speak English, Italian or French.
The experience
You meet on the beach at Spiaggia delle Acque Calde and get fitted with a kayak, lifejacket, helmet and drybags. The operator picks between an open or closed boat depending on the day's conditions. A short safety introduction and paddle lesson gets you ready, then you push off along the east coast of Vulcano Island. The paddle takes you past thermal bays where warm water bubbles up from underwater vents, into sea caves carved by ancient lava flows, and through natural rock arches. At designated stops you can slip into the water to snorkel in the clear bays, or stay in the boat and watch the landscape pass.
On the return route you'll pass the fumaroles (volcanic vents releasing gas and heat into the water) visible as bubbling patches on the surface. The whole outing runs about two hours and ends back at the base. The tour suits novices who want a guided introduction to sea kayaking and swimmers who want to explore the island's underwater caves, and it also works for experienced paddlers looking for caving and rugged coastline.
