The experience

You meet your guide at Pescallo, a fishing village 15 minutes' walk from the Bellagio Boat Terminal, where the beach beside Hotel La Pergola is the starting point. After a safety briefing and fitting of life jackets, you paddle out across the bay and around the hamlet, hugging Bellagio's coastline as it curves past noble villas, the Rockefeller Foundation property, and the landmark Grand Hotel Serbelloni. The 1.5-hour route takes you through the center of Lake Como, with the Alps rising behind the western shore and the lake's three branches spreading out in front of you.

After paddling, a private car transfers you to a charming hilltop restaurant where lunch includes a starter, first course, glass of wine, water and coffee. The meal sits above the lake, so you can see the water and mountains from the table. When you finish, you walk down to Villa Melzi Gardens (your ticket is included), to wander the grounds on your own time before heading back.

The whole experience runs about four hours from start to finish. You'll need at least moderate fitness and swimming ability. The operator does not recommend this for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Children are welcome from age 13. Bring your own swimsuit, towel and sunscreen. A dressing room is not available during the kayak portion. If you have dietary requirements, mention them when you book.
