The experience

You arrive before dawn. The balloon inflates on the ground as light breaks over the Sila plateau: one of Italy's oldest and most important protected areas, a maze of mountains, green valleys threaded with streams, and centuries-old woods. Once airborne, you drift at the pace of the wind itself, neither fast nor slow, suspended between the speed of the air and the lightness of the balloon. The peaks rise close enough to touch. Below, the wheat fields roll soft and velvety. Every flight is different: the wind decides the route, the altitude, which valleys open beneath you.

The guide travels with the group and speaks English or Italian. Children from seven onward can fly. The experience unfolds over one to three hours depending on conditions and where the wind carries you. When you land, breakfast waits: a meal that tastes different after an hour aloft, looking down at the land where it came from.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (7 to 16 years). Children under 7 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Sila and why does it matter for this flight?

Sila National Park is one of Italy's longest-protected areas, a plateau of mountains, ancient forests and streams in Calabria. The protected landscape means the terrain below stays largely unchanged, so the flight passes over ridges, valleys and farmland that have looked much the same for centuries.

How does a hot air balloon actually move if there's no engine?

The balloon drifts with the wind, so your speed and direction depend entirely on air currents at the altitude you're flying. You rise and fall by heating or cooling the air inside the envelope, but you travel where the wind goes, which is why each flight takes a different path.

What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate on the day I'm booked?

Wind and visibility determine whether the flight can go ahead. The operator will reschedule you for another day or discuss options if conditions don't allow a safe flight on your date.

Can I bring my seven-year-old, or are there other age limits?

Children are welcome from age seven. The flight is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health, so check your fitness level before booking.
