The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Syracuse accommodation in an air-conditioned Mercedes. The driver takes you to Rifugio Sapienza at 1,920 meters, where the day splits into two paths. You can walk one of the marked trails on the Etna Park slopes up to around 2,000 meters, exploring the volcanic terrain at your own pace. Or you can pay extra locally to ride the Etna cableway up to 2,504 meters, then board a special 4x4 vehicle that climbs to Torre del Filosofo at 2,900 meters: high enough to see the central crater, the South-East crater, and the historic lava flows spreading toward the sea.

After the volcano, the route descends to Zafferana Etnea, known for its honey. A tasting is included: Zafferana honey, local wine made by the owners, and oil pressed from olives and tomatoes grown on the slopes. From Piazza Belvedere, a view opens across the landscape. Food and drinks beyond the tasting cost extra. Water is provided in the vehicle throughout the day.

Is this one for you?Choose the standard walk if you want a full day on the volcano without extra cost. Book the high-altitude option at checkout if reaching 2,900 meters and seeing the central crater is worth the additional expense and the steeper climb.
