The experience

Bolzano sits at the gateway to the Dolomites, and this tour takes you east along roads built into the mountains themselves. You cross the Ega Valley between the Catinaccio and Latemar peaks, a route dating to 1894, and stop at Lake Carezza for a walk around its western shore if you want one. The drive then climbs to Costalunga Pass, where the Grand Hotel Carezza still stands from 1893, the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites. From there you drop into the Fassa Valley and pass through Vigo di Fassa and Canazei, arriving beneath the Sella Group's imposing rock faces.

The route continues through 27 hairpin bends to Pordoi Pass at 2,239 meters, then descends to Falzarego Pass at 2,150 meters, where you stop for lunch surrounded by 360-degree panoramic views of the eastern Dolomites. From Cortina d'Ampezzo, the tour reaches Lake Misurina, which frames the Tre Cime di Lavaredo to the north and the Sorapis mountains to the south: the most photographed view in the Dolomites. A short stop at Lake Dobbiaco follows, then the day ends at Lake Braies in the far northeast, just kilometers from the Austrian border, before the return drive through the Pusteria and Isarco valleys back to Bolzano takes about an hour and forty minutes.

The itinerary is fully adaptable: you can stop for photos, short walks, or coffee breaks wherever you choose, and the route adjusts based on weather and how you're feeling. The driver speaks English or Italian, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided. The tour runs 9 to 11 hours depending on where you linger and which stops you take.
