The experience
The tour starts in front of the Sanremo Casino and heads inland along the ancient Roman road toward the Nervia Valley. The drive itself is part of the experience: the coastline gives way to green slopes dotted with lemon trees and Mediterranean maquis as you climb into Liguria's hinterland, one of the region's least-explored corners. Dolceacqua sits at the heart of it, a medieval village built around a single-arched bridge that spans 33 meters across the river: the same bridge Claude Monet painted and described in his diary as "a jewel of lightness."
Your licensed guide walks you through the old town, pointing out the Castello dei Doria, the imposing ruin that towers over the left bank. Dolceacqua's name means "sweet water," and the village is the home of Rossese di Dolceacqua, one of Italy's finest red wines and a favorite of Napoleon's. The tour does not rush: you have time to cross Monet's bridge on foot and absorb the narrow streets and stone buildings that have drawn artists and wine lovers for centuries.
At the end, you taste two local wines (the ruby-red Rossese and a local white) paired with focaccia and michette, a small local cake. This pairing is the tour's way of anchoring what you've seen: the wine, the village, the valley's character, all in one tasting. The return to Sanremo is by the same minivan, and the whole experience takes 4 hours.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, French and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (4 to 12 years). Children under 4 can't be included in the booking.
What is the Castello dei Doria and why is it in Dolceacqua?
The Castello dei Doria is a medieval ruin that dominates the old town from the left bank of the river. It is the imposing fortress that towers over Dolceacqua and is included in the guided walk through the village.
Is the bridge Monet painted something I'll actually walk across?
Yes. The 15th-century single-arched bridge is part of the village walk, and you cross it on foot. It is the same bridge Monet immortalized on canvas and described as a jewel of lightness.
What wines do I taste and what do they pair with?
You taste Rossese di Dolceacqua, a local ruby-red wine, and a local white wine. Both are paired with focaccia and michette, a small local cake made in the region.
How much walking is involved in the village itself?
The guide leads you through the medieval streets and to the bridge, so there is moderate walking on foot through the old town. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the village is built on uneven terrain.
Can I visit the Dolceacqua Castle interior?
The tour includes a visit to the Castello dei Doria ruins. Entry to the castle interior is available as an optional add-on at checkout if you want to go inside.
What if the weather is bad?
The tour runs regardless of weather: rain, hail or shine. If rain is forecast, bring an umbrella or raincoat, as you will be outdoors for most of the day, especially during the village walk and the bridge crossing.
