The tour departs from the cruise port shuttle stop and covers roughly 8.5 hours. Civita sits on a 300-meter pedestrian bridge, isolated and eroding. The experience

The tour picks you up at Largo della Pace in Civitavecchia, the final stop of the port's free shuttle bus, and heads toward Civita di Bagnoregio in Tuscia, on the border between Tuscany and Lazio. The village sits on a peninsula of eroding clay soil, connected to the rest of the world by a single 300-meter pedestrian bridge. The Romanesque arch at the entrance was built by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago. What remains of a Renaissance palace is only its facade, the rest collapsed into the Valle dei Calanchi below. You walk through narrow streets and old houses, visit the main piazza (where donkey races happen twice a year), and can reach Maria's Garden on the far side of town for views into the canyon. The isolation and the slow erosion that earned it the name "dying city" make the visit feel like stepping into a place outside time.

From Civita, the tour transfers to Bomarzo to visit the Sacred Wood, or Monster Park, designed by Prince Vicino Orsini and architect Ligorio starting in the mid-16th century. It is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world. Stone figures of disproportionate size and surreal placement animate the corners of the park, creating an interplay between nature and art that defies the perspective rules of the Renaissance. The sculptures are the main draw. The park itself is a masterpiece of creative landscape design.

Entry to both Civita di Bagnoregio and the Monster Park is included, as is the round-trip shared transfer from the port. Your driver speaks English and can answer questions about the sites along the way. The tour ends with drop-off back at the Civitavecchia cruise terminal shuttle stop. Wear comfortable shoes. The village requires walking on uneven ground and narrow streets.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, French and Italian.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 11 years); Infant (under 4): free.

How do I get from the cruise ship to the tour meeting point?

The meeting point is Largo della Pace in Civitavecchia, the final stop of the port's free shuttle bus that picks up passengers from the boat. Your driver will wait there with a sign bearing your name.

What is Civita di Bagnoregio and why is it called the dying city?

Civita di Bagnoregio is a village in Tuscia built on a peninsula of clay soil that is slowly eroding due to weather and natural processes. The land beneath it will inevitably crumble into the canyon below, which is why it is called the dying city. It is connected to the mainland only by a 300-meter pedestrian bridge.

What can I see and do in the village itself?

You walk through old houses and narrow streets, visit the main piazza (the site of donkey races twice yearly), see the Romanesque arch built by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago, and can reach Maria's Garden on the far side of town for canyon views. The Renaissance palace remains only as a facade. The rest fell into the canyon.

What is the Monster Park and who designed it?

The Monster Park, or Sacred Wood, is a Renaissance sculpture garden in Bomarzo designed by Prince Vicino Orsini and architect Ligorio starting in the mid-16th century. It is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world and features stone figures of surreal proportions and placement that create an interplay between art and landscape.

What is included in the tour price?

Entry to both Civita di Bagnoregio and the Monster Park, round-trip shared transfer from Civitavecchia port, and an English-speaking driver are included. Gratuity is not included.
