The experience
Two hours is enough to cover Monterosso's core without rushing. Your guide meets you at the train station and leads you through the old village, pointing out the Aurora tower at the foot of San Cristoforo hill (a landmark visible from all five villages), and the 17th-century oratory with its black-and-white striped façade. You'll also see San Giovanni Battista, built in the 13th and 14th centuries as a specimen of Ligurian Gothic, and learn why the Confraternity of the Blacks got its name from the robes worn during processions.
The tastings are woven through the walk rather than bunched at the end. You stop for focaccia and bruschetta at local spots, then taste five DOC wines made in the Cinque Terre itself. The guide tells you about the history and peculiarities of not just Monterosso but all the villages, giving you context for what you'll see if you explore further on your own.
This works whether you're staying several days or passing through for one afternoon. The guide's tips and local knowledge let you make better use of whatever time you have left in the region.
