Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cinque Terre villages and train travel
- Arrive at La Spezia train station
- Visit Riomaggiore village
- Explore Corniglia village
- Tour Vernazza village
- Discover Monterosso al Mare village
The experience
La Spezia station is where the tour begins, on the rail line that runs between Genoa and Pisa along the Tyrrhenian Sea. From there, you travel by train into Cinque Terre itself, getting on and off at each village stop. Riomaggiore comes first: the busiest of the five, known for its stacked multicolored stone cottages and harbor full of traditional fishing boats. Corniglia sits quieter in the south, still famous for its wine and less crowded than its neighbors. Vernazzo is the only village with a natural harbor and no car traffic. The name comes from the Latin word for "native." Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most well-known, sits on rolling hills planted with lemon trees, grapevines and olives, and has clear water and beaches nearby.
A local guide travels with you the whole way, pointing out the history and answering the questions that make Cinque Terre unusual: why there are no automobiles, what earned it the nickname "Cat Heaven," and what item is wildly popular in the region. The guide speaks English or Italian. You'll spend the day moving between villages by train, with walking through each town included. The pace is moderate. The operator notes that at least a moderate level of physical fitness helps, though the villages themselves are compact and walkable.
Train tickets cost extra (18 euros per adult, 15 euros per senior or child), and are not part of the tour price. Public transportation options are available near La Spezia if you need to reach the station from your hotel.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.
What are the five villages in Cinque Terre and which ones does this tour visit?
Cinque Terre comprises Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazzo, Monterosso al Mare, and a fifth village. This tour visits three to five of them, always including Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazzo, and Monterosso al Mare, depending on the day and your guide's route.
Why can't you drive a car in Cinque Terre?
The five villages have no automobile traffic by design. Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protected by the Cinque Terre National Park, and the villages are built on steep coastal cliffs where roads are not practical. The guide will explain the history and what makes this car-free layout so special.
How do you get between the villages during the tour?
You travel by train between villages, getting on and off at each stop. The train runs along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and connects all five villages. Walking through each village itself is part of the experience.
Is the train ticket included in the tour price?
Train tickets are not included. Adults pay 18 euros, seniors and children pay 15 euros. You'll buy these separately before or at the start of the tour.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
You'll walk through each village as you explore it, but the villages are compact and built on steep terrain rather than spread out. The operator recommends at least a moderate level of physical fitness for the day.
