Step-by-step itinerary

Explore three Cinque Terre villages

  • Meet guide at La Spezia port
  • Travel by train to Cinque Terre
  • Visit Riomaggiore and walk Path of Love
  • Explore Manarola and enjoy viewpoint
  • Discover Vernazza and its harbor

The experience

Riomaggiore is where the tour starts after your guide collects you from the La Spezia port and you both take the train into Cinque Terre. The village sits at sea level with pastel-coloured houses lining the harbour, and from here a scenic trail called the Path of Love once connected lovers before the tunnels were built. It now links Riomaggiore to Manarola and opens onto the coast. Your guide walks you through the village's character before moving on.

Manarola sits 70 metres above sea level on a high rock, so the climb is steeper and the alleys narrower, all of them funnelling down toward the water. The viewpoint from above, known as the Manarola viewpoint, shows the village from a perspective most visitors miss. Vernazzo, the third stop, is often called one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Its small harbour is anchored by the historic Belforte Castle, and the main square fills with restaurants, cafés and shops where you can sit and absorb the local rhythm. The villages are now connected by footpaths and tunnels, though centuries ago they were reachable only by sea. Today the whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The tour runs seven hours from pickup to return, with train travel built in and a professional English-speaking guide throughout. You set the pace inside each village (there's no fixed schedule once you arrive), so the time stretches or contracts depending on how long you linger at a café, on a viewpoint or in the alleys. Bring comfortable walking shoes. The terrain is uneven and involves climbing. Lunch is not included, though the villages have plenty of trattorias and cafés to choose from.

What’s included

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English throughout, so you follow the commentary comfortably even if you don't speak Italian. The seven-hour window gives you real time in each village, not a quick photo stop, so you can sit at a café, explore the alleys or rest on a viewpoint without feeling rushed.

Top questions

What is the Path of Love and can I walk it on this tour?

The Path of Love is a scenic trail that once connected Riomaggiore and Manarola as a meeting place for lovers before the tunnels were constructed. It now offers stunning views along the coast and your guide can show you the route. Whether you walk it depends on how much time you spend in Riomaggiore and your own pace.

Do I need to be very fit to walk through these villages?

The villages involve climbing steep, narrow alleys and uneven terrain, so you need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Manarola in particular sits high on a rock, so the ascent is noticeable. The operator does not recommend this tour for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.

How do I get from La Spezia to the villages?

Your guide meets you at the La Spezia cruise port and you travel together by train to Cinque Terre. Train tickets are included in the tour price.

Can I bring a stroller or pram if I'm traveling with an infant?

Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, though the steep alleys and uneven ground in the villages may make pushing difficult in some areas.

What makes Vernazzo different from the other two villages?

Vernazzo is built around a small harbour dominated by the historic Belforte Castle, creating a charming, vintage atmosphere. Its main square is livelier than the other villages, lined with restaurants, cafés and shops where you can sit and watch the water and the village life unfold.
