The Experience

We slipped off the pier at Monterosso just after lunch, the kind of day where the sun feels like it’s pressing down but the breeze from the water keeps you awake. Our guide—Luca, who grew up in Riomaggiore—kept pointing out little things I never would’ve noticed: a crumbling stone tower tucked into the cliffs, fishing boats bobbing in colors that almost hurt your eyes. The Cinque Terre boat tour felt different from anything I’d done on land; somehow seeing those villages from the water made them look even more improbable, stacked up like someone forgot how gravity works.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much. When we stopped for a swim near Corniglia, Luca handed me a snorkel mask and told me to “just jump.” The water was cold enough to jolt my brain awake (in June!), but once I got used to it, there was this weird silence under the surface—just my own breath and flashes of silver fish. Back on board, someone passed around focaccia with pesto that smelled like basil and garlic. I tried saying grazie with my mouth full—probably sounded ridiculous. Prosecco tasted better with salt still on my lips.

Later we drifted past Manarola and Riomaggiore—everyone scrambling for photos while Luca told stories about his grandmother swimming here as a girl. In low season he’ll sometimes dock in Vernazza for a walk through those narrow lanes; today we just floated nearby because it was busy. Honestly, I still think about that view back toward Monterosso as we turned around—music playing quietly somewhere behind me and sun starting to slide down. Not sure why that stuck with me.
