You walk through the security checkpoint at Piazza della Libertà and head straight to the ticketing desk inside the Villa. A Vatican staff member is waiting to lead the walking tour of the Secret Garden: the part most visitors to Castel Gandolfo never see. The garden sits on the edge of Lake Albano, about 30 kilometers outside Rome, and the light there is different from the city: softer, less crowded. You move through the grounds with maybe a dozen other people, not a tour bus in sight.
Then you're inside the Papal Apartments themselves. The bedroom, the private chapel, the library, the study: each one opens into the next, and you can move through at your own pace. The balcony is the moment that lands hardest. This is where the Pope stands every summer Sunday to deliver the Angelus, speaking to the crowds gathered below. Standing there, looking out at the lake and the village, you understand why a Pope would choose to spend the summer here instead of anywhere else. The Papal Apartments alone could take an hour or two, depending on how long you linger in each room.
