The experience
The day starts at 8:30 AM from Hotel Politeama in Palermo and heads north toward Cefalù, passing Mount Pellegrino on the way. Once there, a guide leads you through the village's main attractions: the Duomo, built in 1131 and famous for its Christ Pantocrator mosaic; the Medieval Washhouse, a 16th-century site carved into rock with stone basins still fed by a natural spring; and the harborfront promenade. You'll have free time to explore at your own pace, shop or grab lunch on your own before the group moves on.
After about an hour by bus, you arrive at Caccamo, a town at the foot of Mount San Calogero. A guided tour of Castello di Caccamo, one of Sicily's best-preserved medieval castles, shows the architecture and layout that made it a stronghold for centuries. Then you're free to wander the tiny medieval streets of the village before the return journey to Palermo, where you're expected back in the evening.
The group stays small, travels in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver separate from your guide, and operates in English, Italian or French depending on the day. The itinerary may run in reverse order. Dress code applies at the Duomo: knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women, and no shorts or sleeveless tops are permitted.
