Summary

Pedal Asinara’s wild roads with an e-bike and ferry start

You’ll collect your e-bike right at Porto Torres port before hopping on the ferry to Asinara. Ride at your own rhythm past wild donkeys and sea cliffs, stopping wherever catches your eye. No guide or fixed route—just you, Sardinian breeze, and endless island roads until evening return.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Hands already a little sweaty as I tried to adjust the helmet — the guy at the Porto Torres port just grinned and tightened the strap for me. He had this Sardinian accent I couldn’t quite place, soft but quick. The e-bike was waiting right by the ferry ramp, battery fully charged, and honestly, I felt relieved not to have to lug anything through town. There’s a salty smell in the air here that sticks to your skin, even before you board. Ferry ride over was quiet; some locals chatted about fishing near Cala d’Oliva, and a kid pointed out a white donkey grazing by the shore as we docked. I’d read about those donkeys but seeing one up close — their fur almost blue-white in the sun — felt strangely lucky.

No guide hurrying us along, just open roads and that weird feeling of being both lost and totally free. The path from the dock is rough in spots (watch out for loose gravel), but with pedal assist it’s almost too easy — wind against my face, cicadas buzzing somewhere in the brush. At one point I stopped for water and heard nothing but distant waves and my own breathing. The colors are hard to describe: sea glass green coves next to dry gold hills, then sudden bursts of purple thistle. I passed a couple from Milan who were arguing about which way led to Fornelli — they laughed when I pulled out my phone GPS like it was cheating. Guess everyone makes their own map out here.

I didn’t expect how much I’d love setting my own pace on Asinara with an e-bike rental — no schedule except sunset back at Porto Torres. My legs barely noticed the hills thanks to that motor (I’m not exactly Tour de France material). There’s something about eating a squashed sandwich on a stone wall with only sheep watching you that feels… real? Anyway, if you want silence broken only by wind or maybe a donkey braying somewhere far off, this is it. Still thinking about that light on the water as we ferried home.
