The Experience
The boat is waiting at the dock in Salerno, all white and gleaming, a Cayman 585 with a Yamaha 40/70 engine that just came off the line. You can take the wheel yourself if you want—no license needed—or pay extra for a professional skipper to handle the throttle while you sit back and navigate where to go. Either way, it's just you and whoever you brought, up to eight people total, five adults and three kids, or six adults if you're counting strictly. The boat is wide enough to move around in, 2.50 meters across, long enough to feel solid in the water at 5.85 meters, and it comes with everything bolted down: life jackets, a shower to rinse off salt, snorkel masks and fins, an igloo already stocked with ice, and a Bluetooth speaker you can plug your phone into.
You point the bow toward Positano or Amalfi—wherever the mood takes you—and the day is yours. The Amalfi coast from the water looks different than it does from the road: the cliffs drop straight down, the villages cling to the rock, and the water is clear enough to see the bottom in the shallows. Stop where you want, jump in with the snorkel gear, float above the rocks and the fish. The boat has an awning to get out of the sun, and if you didn't pack lunch, you can pre-order food and drinks to be waiting on board when you pick the boat up. The only thing not included is fuel—you pay for what you burn when you bring it back, calculated on the spot.
If you're renting without a skipper, you need to be comfortable handling a boat; the engine is responsive and the coast has traffic, especially near the towns. If you'd rather not worry about it, the skipper option takes that off your hands, though it costs more. Pickup and dropoff can happen in a few different towns along the coast—Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Praiano, Amalfi, Positano—so you can choose the one closest to where you're staying or the one that makes sense for your route that day.
